Working with Wildlife

Working with Wildlife offers immersive conservation safaris in South Africa's largest private big-5 reserve, Khamab Kalahari Reserve, providing participants with hands-on experiences in wildlife research and preservation. Their programs focus on tracking and monitoring endangered species such as African wild dogs, cheetahs, and pangolins, allowing guests to actively contribute to vital conservation efforts. Activities include predator research using GPS technology, camera trap monitoring, game counts to assess wildlife populations, vegetation surveys for habitat restoration, and participation in anti-poaching initiatives. Dr. Sally Armstrong, a distinguished wildlife veterinarian from Australia, has devoted her career to animal conservation. Now based in Cape Town, South Africa, she is a leading figure in preserving diverse species across Africa.

 

With extensive experience in veterinary medicine, specializing in wildlife health and management, she collaborates with conservation organizations, other vets and game reserves. Dr. Armstrong provides medical care, rehabilitation, and implements conservation strategies for a range of wildlife, emphasizing her commitment to the well-being of species from endangered animals to large mammals.

 

Beyond her clinical work, she is a passionate advocate, actively raising awareness about wildlife challenges. Through education and conservation safaris, Dr. Armstrong promotes understanding and support for wildlife preservation

Day 1: Welcome to the Eastern Cape – Elephant Conservation Encounter
After arriving in Port Elizabeth, journey through scenic countryside to meet rescued bull elephants Duma, Thaba, and Mukwa. Spend time with their handlers and learn about their stories before settling into Buffalo Kloof Game Reserve for a luxurious stay and afternoon game drive.

Day 2: Rhino Conservation & AI Tracking Collar Fitting
Begin the day by assisting in a rhino collaring procedure using AI tracking technology to combat poaching. Board a helicopter for an aerial view of the reserve, followed by an insightful session with the anti-poaching team and their highly trained canine unit.

Day 3: Cheetah Conservation & Tracking
Join an experienced ecologist to track cheetahs on foot. Learn about the unique challenges facing these magnificent animals while capturing unforgettable moments in the wild. Spend the afternoon relaxing at the lodge and enjoying a scenic game drive.

Day 4: Travel to KwaZulu Natal – Phinda Private Game Reserve
Depart Buffalo Kloof for King Shaka Airport, then transfer to the world-renowned Phinda Private Game Reserve. Settle into the tranquil Zuka Lodge and enjoy an afternoon game drive to spot the Big Five before dinner prepared by your personal chef.

Day 5: Elephant Conservation & Zulu Cultural Community Visit
Assist in fitting a tracking collar on an elephant and experience the profound connection with one of nature’s giants. In the afternoon, visit a local Zulu village to learn about traditional customs and culture before enjoying a magical bush dinner.

Day 6: Rhino Dehorning & Pangolin Tracking
Participate in a rhino dehorning procedure aimed at protecting the species from poachers. Later, track the elusive pangolin and assist with fitting an AI tracking device to aid conservation efforts. End the day with drinks at sunset and a gourmet dinner.

Day 7: Welcome to Cape Town
Fly to Cape Town and marvel at its breathtaking mountain and ocean views. After settling into your accommodation, enjoy a relaxing afternoon before dining at one of the city’s top local restaurants.

Day 8: Cape Point Nature Reserve & Penguin Colony Visit
Explore Chapman’s Peak Drive en route to Cape Point Nature Reserve. See wildlife such as baboons, ostriches, and springbok. Visit Boulder's Beach to see the endangered African penguins before heading to a nearby winery for dinner.

Day 9: Whale & Shark Private Boat Charter & Winery Tour
Embark on a private boat charter to witness whales and sharks. After the tour, visit Cape Town’s best wineries for wine tasting and a delicious lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing at your guesthouse before a casual dinner.

Day 10: Table Mountain & V&A Waterfront
Take a scenic drive to Table Mountain and ascend via the cable car for panoramic views of Cape Town. Explore the famous V&A Waterfront for lunch, shopping, and a traditional African dinner with live entertainment.

Day 11: Relaxation or Optional Activities
Enjoy your final full day in Cape Town with a choice of relaxing at your luxury guesthouse or participating in various optional activities, including winery tours, mountain hikes, and Robben Island visits.

Day 12: End of Safari
Conclude your unforgettable journey with a farewell breakfast before transferring to the airport for your flight home, leaving with lasting memories and new knowledge of wildlife conservation efforts.
